Gaza Baby Saved from Womb of Mother Killed in Israeli Strike: Miracle Amid Tragedy

Photo : AP

Amidst the devastation of intensified Israeli strikes in Gaza City's Rafah district, a glimmer of hope emerges as a newborn baby girl is delivered via emergency C-section from the womb of her mother, Sabreen Al Sakani, tragically killed alongside her husband and daughter. The harrowing toll of the strikes left 19 people dead overnight, including 13 children from a single family, in hits targeting two residential homes, according to Palestinian health officials.

The infant, weighing a fragile 1.4 kg, is now under the care of medical professionals in a Rafah hospital. Dr. Mohammed Salama, overseeing her treatment, notes that the baby, born prematurely at 30 weeks, is stable and showing signs of gradual improvement. Placed in an incubator alongside another infant, she bears the poignant inscription "The baby of the martyr Sabreen Al-Sakani" on tape across her chest.

Heartbreaking details emerge of the family's aspirations, as Sabreen's young daughter, Malak, who perished in the strike, had eagerly anticipated the arrival of her new sister, expressing a desire to name her Rouh, meaning spirit in Arabic, as revealed by her uncle Rami Al-Sheikh.

However, amidst the faint glimmer of hope, the reality of loss and displacement looms large. Dr. Salama estimates the infant's hospital stay to be three to four weeks, after which her uncertain future awaits. Contemplating the profound tragedy, he reflects on the daunting prospect that even if the child survives, she enters the world as an orphan, with uncertain guardianship arrangements.

The toll of the strikes extends beyond individual tragedies, resonating with collective grief and despair among Gaza's populace. Saqr Abdel Aal, grieving over the loss of his family members, laments the obliteration of his entire identity, with loved ones erased by the relentless onslaught.

The dire humanitarian situation in Gaza exacerbates the anguish, with over half of the territory's population seeking refuge in Rafah from the relentless Israeli offensive. Fearing an imminent ground offensive, residents like Abu Jehad feel trapped, anticipating further displacement and loss in the absence of a ceasefire.

The ongoing conflict has drawn international attention, with President Joe Biden urging restraint to prevent further civilian casualties. Meanwhile, Palestinian health authorities report a staggering death toll and a relentless barrage of Israeli strikes, underscoring the urgent need for a cessation of hostilities and a path towards lasting peace.

As the world watches with bated breath, Gaza's residents remain caught in the crossfire, grappling with unspeakable loss amidst the ruins of their shattered lives.
