First Time in 147 Years: England Sets Record, India Nowhere Near Matching It

England made history on the second day of the second Test match against New Zealand in Wellington. They built a huge lead of 533 runs by the end of the day and became the first team in cricket history to score 500,000 runs in Test matches. This is a big moment for England, as they reached this milestone in their 1,082nd Test match. Australia is in second place with 428,868 runs, and India is in third place with 278,751 runs.

On Day 2, England completely controlled the game. In the morning, they bowled out New Zealand for just 125 runs in their first innings. Gus Atkinson was the star bowler for England. He took three wickets in three balls, which is called a hat-trick. He got Nathan Smith, Matt Henry, and Tim Southee out one after the other. This made him the first England bowler in seven years to take a hat-trick in Test cricket. Atkinson’s final bowling figures were 4 wickets for 31 runs. Brydon Carse also bowled brilliantly, taking 4 wickets for 46 runs. New Zealand’s batters struggled and could only add 39 runs to their overnight score of 86/5 before losing their remaining wickets.

In their second innings, England’s batters played with confidence and skill. Jacob Bethell and Ben Duckett gave England a strong start with a partnership of 187 runs for the second wicket. Bethell scored 96 runs from 118 balls, hitting 10 fours and 3 sixes. He came very close to scoring his first Test century but got out just 4 runs short. Ben Duckett also batted well and scored 92 runs from 112 balls. He too missed his century after getting out while trying to play a big shot. Harry Brook added a quick 55 runs to the total, while Joe Root stayed unbeaten on 73. Root also reached a special milestone by becoming the fourth player in cricket history to score 50 runs in 100 Test innings. Captain Ben Stokes added a fast 35 runs and was still batting when the day ended.

For New Zealand, it was a very tough day. Their bowlers worked hard, but England’s batters dominated them. New Zealand’s batters also failed to put up a strong fight in their first innings, and now they face a very big challenge in the fourth innings. To win this match, they will have to chase a huge score, which is almost impossible. The highest successful run chase at Wellington’s Basin Reserve is 274 runs, and that was achieved by Pakistan in 2003.

This Test match has shown England’s strength in both batting and bowling. They are in complete control of the game and are looking to win the match and the series. New Zealand will need a miracle to turn things around, but fans are excited to see how the next days of the match unfold.
