Experts suggest number plates for e-scooter registration in Dubai.

The proliferation of e-scooters across Dubai has transformed the city's mobility landscape, offering residents a convenient and cost-effective mode of transportation. With their increasing popularity as first- and last-mile solutions, e-scooters have seamlessly integrated into daily commuting routines, replacing the need for traditional forms of transport. However, alongside their widespread adoption comes a pressing need for regulatory measures to address emerging safety concerns and ensure responsible usage.

A recent community dialogue on traffic safety, organized by Dubai Police and attended by representatives from Khaleej Times, underscored the necessity of registering e-scooters to mitigate potential risks to public safety. Currently, e-scooter riders are mandated to obtain permits from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), exempted only if they hold existing motorcycle or driving licenses. Despite this regulatory framework, battery-powered e-scooters remain unregistered, contrasting with the promotion of e-scooters as legitimate forms of transportation.

Experts advocate for the introduction of registration protocols, proposing the issuance of unique identification or number plates for e-scooters. Thomas Edelmann, founder of RoadSafetyUAE, emphasizes the multifaceted benefits of registration, including heightened awareness of e-scooters as legitimate vehicles, enhanced accountability in the event of accidents, and streamlined enforcement of regulations pertaining to speed limits and safety specifications.

Moreover, e-scooter registration facilitates the provision of insurance coverage, empowering riders to safeguard themselves against potential accidents and injuries. By integrating e-scooters into the regulatory framework, authorities can effectively monitor and regulate their usage, curbing risky behaviors such as speeding and reckless riding. Concerns regarding road safety have been mounting, with Dubai Police reporting a significant number of accidents and fatalities attributed to e-scooter misuse.

Residents and motorists alike have voiced their support for increased regulations governing e-scooter usage, citing concerns over indiscriminate parking and pedestrian safety. A recent online survey conducted by Khaleej Times revealed widespread backing for stricter regulations, reflecting a collective desire for enhanced safety measures and responsible e-scooter usage.

Dr. Mostafa Al Dah, an Emirati researcher specializing in transport safety, underscores the importance of evidence-based policymaking to address safety issues surrounding micromobility devices. While the prospect of e-scooter registration holds promise for improving safety standards, further research and modeling are needed to assess its efficacy in accident prevention.

Addressing concerns over the potential cost implications of registration, experts suggest that e-scooter registration could be implemented at minimal or no cost to users, aligning with the RTA's commitment to promoting accessibility and safety in urban mobility solutions. As Dubai continues to embrace e-scooters as a key component of its transportation ecosystem, stakeholders are poised to collaboratively navigate the regulatory landscape, fostering a safer and more sustainable urban environment for all.
