Kolkata – Sandip Ghosh, the former head of RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, is under intense scrutiny following serious allegations of corruption and illegal activities. Ghosh, who has been interrogated extensively by the CBI in connection with the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor, was previously accused of trafficking bodies and biomedical waste.
The allegations were brought forth by Akhtar Ali, who served as Deputy Medical Superintendent at RG Kar and currently holds the same position at Murshidabad Medical College. Ali claimed that he had lodged complaints with both the Vigilance Commission and the Anti-Corruption Bureau, and had attempted to file a police case, which was rejected.
Ali detailed that Ghosh was involved in trafficking biomedical waste, such as used syringes and gloves, which were allegedly sold to Bangladeshi buyers. He named a security officer, Khan, as being complicit in this activity. Additionally, Ali accused Ghosh of illegally selling bodies, a charge that was supposedly backed by complaints from family members and the head of Forensic Medicine. Despite these complaints, no action was reportedly taken, and Ali mentioned that a national commission’s summons to Ghosh had led to no visible outcomes.

Ali further accused Ghosh of accepting bribes amounting to 20% for awarding work contracts and deliberately failing students. He described Ghosh as operating like a "mafia" figure. Despite these serious accusations, Ali alleged that authorities had failed to act, and his recent attempt to file a FIR was denied. Ali has also filed a criminal case in the Calcutta High Court, which is expected to be heard soon.
In recent developments, Dr. Ghosh, who resigned from RG Kar Hospital following the discovery of the murdered doctor's body, was swiftly appointed to head the Calcutta National Medical College. This appointment was met with significant criticism from the High Court, which questioned the timing of the appointment and suggested that Ghosh should not be working elsewhere given the circumstances.
The court also expressed concerns about whether the ruling Trinamool Congress party was shielding Ghosh. The Supreme Court has since questioned both the reappointment and the delay in registering a police case after the discovery of the doctor’s body.
Amidst these controversies, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's government has mandated a special police team to investigate the allegations. Ghosh could also face additional charges related to disclosing the identity of the deceased doctor. The CBI’s investigation into Ghosh has extended over 60 hours of questioning, reflecting the seriousness of the case and its implications for the integrity of medical and administrative practices in the region.
