Dubai's RTA clarifies e-scooter ban inside metro, tram.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has clarified its stance on the use of electric scooters within the Dubai Metro and Tram systems. According to the RTA, non-electric scooters and foldable bicycles without a battery are still permitted and can be stored in designated luggage spaces inside the trains. However, e-scooters, which are battery-operated, are now prohibited from being brought onto the metro and tram starting from March 1st.

The announcement caught many e-scooter users by surprise on Friday morning, as they were informed of the sudden ban. Some commuters were left with no option but to park their e-scooters outside metro stations, while others had to make alternative travel arrangements. The RTA took to Twitter on Thursday night to announce the decision, citing safety concerns as the primary reason for the ban. They emphasized that ensuring the safety of passengers is their top priority.

In a statement provided to Khaleej Times, the RTA reiterated their commitment to passenger safety by prohibiting the carriage of e-scooters and other battery-operated micro-mobility devices on board the Dubai metro and tram systems. This decision stems from concerns over the potential fire hazards posed by these devices. The RTA clarified that the ban will remain in effect until further notice, pending a review of safety regulations.

The move underscores the RTA's proactive approach to ensuring the safety and well-being of commuters using public transportation in Dubai. By addressing potential risks associated with battery-operated devices, such as e-scooters, the RTA aims to mitigate any safety hazards and maintain a secure environment for all passengers. This decision also reflects the RTA's commitment to upholding stringent safety standards across its transportation network.

While the ban may inconvenience some e-scooter users, the RTA's priority is to safeguard the interests of passengers and prevent any potential accidents or incidents onboard metro and tram services. By enforcing this ban, the RTA seeks to prevent the risk of fires or other safety hazards that could arise from the use of battery-operated devices in confined spaces such as trains.

Looking ahead, the RTA will continue to monitor developments in micro-mobility regulations and explore ways to safely integrate electric scooters and similar devices into public transportation systems in the future. However, until comprehensive safety measures are established, the ban on e-scooters remains in place to ensure the continued safety and security of passengers using the Dubai Metro and Tram.
