In the build-up to Saturday's $12 million Dubai World Cup (G1), the post position draw at Dubai's Armani Hotel brought a mix of emotions for the trio of Dubai runners vying for victory. Doug Watson's Kabirkhan secured the advantageous second post, while Musabbeh Al Mheiri's Military Law drew barrier four. However, Bhupat Seemar's hopes with Laurel River were dashed as they drew the widest gate, number 12.
Despite the challenging draw, jockey Tadhg O'Shea remained optimistic, acknowledging the difficulty but expressing confidence in his ability to navigate from the outermost gate. Seemar also maintained a positive outlook, determined to make the best of the situation with a strong horse and capable jockey.
Watson, buoyed by his previous success with Isolate in the Godolphin Mile, expressed satisfaction with Kabirkhan's draw, considering it an improvement from the worst-case scenario of gate 12. With Kabirkhan's proven capabilities, Watson remained hopeful for a successful outing.
Among the other contenders, last year's winner, Ushba Tesoro, drew well in barrier five, while Newgate, under the guidance of Frankie Dettori and trained by Bob Baffert, secured an ideal barrier six. Todd Pletcher's Crupi drew the coveted pole position, igniting hopes for a breakthrough victory in Dubai.
The draw ceremony, attended by dignitaries, sponsors, and horsemen, set the stage for an exhilarating Dubai World Cup. Major General Dr. Mohammed Essa Al Adhab welcomed attendees, highlighting Dubai's stature as the global hub of horse racing and expressing gratitude for the diverse array of participants. The event underscored the anticipation and excitement surrounding the 28th edition of the Dubai World Cup, a testament to the enduring passion for racing worldwide.
Representatives from sponsors such as Emirates, Longines, DP World, Nakheel, Atlantis The Royal, Azizi, Al Tayer Motors, Emaar, and One Zabeel were also present, emphasizing the collaborative effort in making the event a success. As preparations intensify for Saturday's races, participants and spectators alike anticipate a thrilling display of athleticism and sportsmanship on the world stage.
