Dubai Unveils New Taxi Platform with Varied Fare Choices

Photo: yourstory.com

A new taxi platform, Drife, has received a license to operate in Dubai, introducing an auction-based pricing model that eliminates the traditional commission process. This innovative approach aims to benefit both riders and drivers by offering lower prices for passengers and higher incomes for drivers.

Drife, positioned as the UAE's first decentralized ride-hailing platform, allows users to select fares from multiple drivers. Each ride has a minimum fare, typically 30% higher than standard rates according to Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) regulations. Drivers can then choose to provide discounts, maintain standard fares, or propose a premium.

The platform operates on a zero-commission fee structure, ensuring that drivers receive the entire fare paid by the rider. Drife sustains its operations through a subscription-based model, where drivers pay a fee to access the platform. This approach fosters a mutually beneficial ecosystem, allowing drivers to earn more while offering affordable fares to riders.

Upon its launch, Drife will commence with 1,000 cabs, initially partnering with Dubai's limousine drivers and eventually aiming to onboard RTA taxis. Drivers can sign up for the platform by downloading the application and submitting necessary documents, including Emirates ID, driving license, and RTA card. Independent background checks are conducted to prioritize safety and security.

Drife's services, termed "taxi 3.0," empower the community, market, and drivers by allowing them to control pricing without commissions. Blockchain technology ensures transparency in pricing. In the future, the platform plans to introduce its own cryptocurrency, the DRF token, subject to approval by Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority.

While DRF tokens will serve as a payment option, traditional methods such as cash, credit, and debit cards will remain prevalent during the initial phase. In 2023, Drife obtained licenses in various Indian cities, boasting over 350,000 users and 30,000+ drivers by the end of the previous year.
