Dubai Culture is pushing the boundaries of archaeological exploration by using modern technology and strategic partnerships to uncover more secrets of the past. The Saruq Al-Hadid archaeological site, discovered in 2002 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, continues to reveal valuable insights about ancient civilizations.
By working with Khalifa University of Science and Technology, Dubai Culture has introduced advanced ground-penetrating radar (GPR), magnetic surveys, and high-precision topographic mapping to study the site. These non-invasive technologies allow researchers to explore underground features without damaging them. So far, over 400 hidden objects have been detected, which could be made of metal or other materials. The study has also identified five possible buried structures and six key areas within the site that may hold important historical artifacts.

This new approach has made a big impact, reducing excavation time and costs by 30%. This means researchers can uncover more historical treasures faster and more efficiently, while also supporting Dubai Culture’s sustainability goals by minimizing environmental impact.
Dubai Culture is dedicated to protecting and promoting Dubai’s rich history. The city’s archaeological sites are important sources of knowledge and research, helping to preserve its tangible and intangible heritage. These efforts are part of the ‘Dubai Legacy’ initiative, which aims to document and share stories from Dubai’s diverse communities, strengthening national identity and cultural preservation.
Saruq Al-Hadid: A Hub of Discovery
According to Muna Al Gurg, CEO of the Museums & Heritage Sector at Dubai Culture, the Saruq Al-Hadid site is one of the most important and expansive archaeological locations in the Arabian Peninsula. It attracts researchers from around the world, especially those studying Prehistory. She explained that thanks to new technology, researchers have been able to make groundbreaking discoveries that give a better understanding of the region’s history, particularly the economy and way of life during the Bronze and Iron Ages.
Studies confirm that Saruq Al-Hadid was a major metallurgical center during the Iron Age, meaning it was a hub for metal production and trade. Excavations have uncovered thousands of rare artifacts, including bronze, ceramic, and stone vessels, as well as daggers, swords, axes, iron and bronze arrowheads. Researchers have also found beautifully decorated seashell ornaments and thousands of beads made from precious and semi-precious stones. In addition, unique gold and silver artifacts and several local and foreign seals have been discovered, further proving the site's historical significance.
By combining technology with archaeology, Dubai Culture is making remarkable progress in uncovering the rich history of the region. These discoveries not only provide valuable insights into the past but also help preserve the legacy of Dubai for future generations.
