Covid Vaccine Withdrawn by AstraZeneca Cite Commercial Reasons Worldwide: Report

AstraZeneca has commenced a global withdrawal of its COVID-19 vaccine, a move following reports acknowledging rare side effects associated with the jab. Developed jointly by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India under the name Covishield, the vaccine has been discontinued due to what the British pharmaceutical company termed as "commercial reasons." According to The Telegraph, AstraZeneca cited a surplus of updated COVID-19 vaccines targeting new variants as the rationale behind the withdrawal.

The company announced the voluntary withdrawal of its "marketing authorisation" in the European Union, signaling an end to production and usage of the vaccine. This withdrawal will be replicated across other nations where the vaccine has been administered.

However, AstraZeneca faces legal challenges, including a 100 million pound lawsuit in the UK alleging that the Covid jab led to fatalities and injuries. Court documents from February revealed AstraZeneca's acknowledgment that Covishield can, in rare instances, trigger Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS), linked to at least 81 deaths in the UK. Despite this, the pharmaceutical giant maintains that the withdrawal decision is unrelated to the legal proceedings.

AstraZeneca emphasized the vaccine's global impact, citing over 6.5 million lives saved in its first year of use and the supply of three billion doses worldwide. Acknowledging the development of multiple variant Covid-19 vaccines, the company affirmed its commitment to collaborate with regulators and partners to navigate a path forward and contribute to ending the global pandemic.

Experts anticipate the withdrawal of all "monovalent" vaccines targeting the original Covid strain, to be replaced by updated vaccines addressing a broader spectrum of strains.
