Bolsonaro Leads Rally, Pushes Amnesty Amid Coup Trial

Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro led a large gathering of people in São Paulo. The crowd came to support a new law called amnesty, which could help him and his followers avoid jail. This law could also forgive the people who attacked the country’s Congress building two years ago after Bolsonaro lost the election.

Bolsonaro lost the 2022 election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Now, police say he tried to stop the new president from taking power. They also say he planned with 33 others to hurt or kill Lula and a top court judge.

In March, judges in Brazil agreed to take the case to court. Bolsonaro will now face five serious charges. These include trying to take control by force, being part of a bad group, and harming national places and public things.

At the rally, Bolsonaro said the charges are not true. He told the people that he is being unfairly blamed. He said powerful people want to punish him just because of politics.

Many of his fans wore yellow football shirts and waved Brazil’s flag. They filled the streets and cheered as he spoke. Bolsonaro said he still believes in the people of Brazil. He hopes the country’s Congress will say yes to the new amnesty law, which was written by his friends.

Bolsonaro has always supported Donald Trump, the former U.S. president. He also said the courts in Brazil are doing to him what the courts in France did to Marine Le Pen, a leader with strong views.

In 2023, Brazil’s election court said Bolsonaro cannot run for office again until 2030. This was because he made false claims that Brazil’s voting machines were broken or cheated. He still says that was not true and wants to fight the court’s decision.

Bolsonaro told the crowd that he plans to run for president again in 2026. He said, “If I am not allowed to take part in the 2026 election, it is not fair. That is not real democracy.”
