Biden Denies 'Memory Loss,' Yet Labels Egypt President as Mexico Leader

President Joe Biden passionately, and at times with frustration, addressed concerns about his cognitive abilities in a hastily arranged press conference on Thursday night. The 81-year-old leader sought to refute claims made by a former US attorney, appointed by Donald Trump, who accused him of mishandling classified documents.

During the press conference, Biden vehemently defended his memory and expressed indignation over portrayals of him as an "elderly man with a poor memory." However, the event was marred by a significant gaffe where he mistakenly referred to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi as the leader of Mexico. This error was swiftly seized upon by political opponents, further fueling the narrative that Biden may be unfit for office.

Despite White House allies expressing frustration with what they perceive as media sensationalism, the gaffe added to growing concerns about Biden's age and cognitive abilities. Earlier in the week, he had faced criticism for confusing European leaders' names and declining a pre-Super Bowl interview.

The situation escalated with a Justice Department report on Biden's handling of classified material, which acknowledged his "diminished faculties and faulty memory" but did not recommend criminal charges. Biden rejected these characterizations and emphasized his competence, stating, "I've been president, and I've put this country back on its feet."

Biden refuted specific claims in the report, including the disclosure of classified information to his ghostwriter. He argued that certain communications, like a memo on Afghanistan, should be considered private, not classified. Despite the report's revelations, Biden asserted, "I did not break the law."

The president took particular offense at the report's mention of his son's death, defending his right to privacy on that matter. He dismissed the significance of remembering the exact date, stating, "It wasn't any of their damn business."

In asserting his memory's reliability, Biden declared himself the most qualified person to be President of the United States. He highlighted his cooperation with the special counsel's investigation, including a lengthy interview conducted amid the crisis in the Middle East.

As Biden faces potential re-election against Trump, who is dealing with criminal charges, the political landscape remains tense. Trump's campaign seized on the special counsel report, emphasizing the contrast in their approaches and questioning Biden's fitness for the presidency.
