All About The Chemical Gas Chloropicrin, Which Russia Is Allegedly Using In Ukraine

Photo-Reuters

The United States has leveled accusations against Russia, alleging the use of the banned choking gas Chloropicrin in Ukraine during its military offensive. According to the US Department of State, Russia deployed Chloropicrin, also known as nitrochloroform, to dislodge Ukrainian troops from fortified positions, facilitating significant territorial gains in the conflict-ridden region. The deployment of Chloropicrin, considered a riot control agent, represents a violation of the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), to which Russia is a signatory. Moscow, however, has vehemently denied these allegations, dismissing them as baseless assertions.

Chloropicrin, originally utilized as an insecticide, gained notoriety during World War I when it was weaponized as a chemical agent. Among various gases deployed during warfare, Chloropicrin emerged as a potent tool to incapacitate entrenched soldiers, inducing tearing, burning sensations in the eyes and skin, and causing respiratory distress. Exposure to significant concentrations of Chloropicrin can lead to nausea, vomiting, and potentially fatal consequences. For soldiers entrenched in trenches without adequate gas masks, Chloropicrin attacks present a dire choice between braving enemy fire or succumbing to suffocation.

Both the US and Ukraine have accused Russia of escalating its use of riot control agents, including tear gas laden with CS and CN gases, throughout its military operations in Ukraine. The deployment of Chloropicrin, according to US officials, mirrors tactics previously employed in poisoning incidents involving prominent figures such as Alexei Navalny in 2020 and Sergei Skripal in 2018. In response to these allegations, the US has imposed sanctions on three Russian state entities allegedly linked to Moscow's chemical and biological weapons programs, including a specialized military unit purportedly involved in facilitating the use of Chloropicrin against Ukrainian forces.

Additionally, the US Treasury has imposed sanctions on three entities and two individuals implicated in procuring items for Russian military institutes associated with chemical and biological weapons programs. These measures underscore the gravity of the allegations and the international community's commitment to holding perpetrators of chemical warfare accountable. Amidst escalating tensions and humanitarian concerns in Ukraine, the purported use of Chloropicrin underscores the urgent need for diplomatic intervention and concerted efforts to uphold global prohibitions against the use of chemical weapons.
