His Excellency Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), commended the Barakah Plant’s delivery as a pivotal advancement in the UAE’s quest to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050. Speaking about the milestone, Al Hammadi highlighted the journey from the project's inception in 2012 to the anticipated commercial operations of Unit 4 in 2024 as a testament to the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program's success.

Al Hammadi noted, "The UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program has been a remarkable success, reinforcing national energy security and propelling us closer to our Net Zero goal. The Barakah Plant now contributes significantly by generating 40 TWh of clean electricity annually. This amount covers approximately 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs for the next 60 years, providing a solid foundation for expanding renewable energy initiatives."
The Barakah Plant also plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, preventing 22.4 million tons of CO2 annually. This achievement represents a 24% contribution towards the UAE’s Nationally Determined Contributions by 2030. The program has set a global benchmark for the efficient delivery of a civil nuclear energy program while adhering to stringent regulatory standards and international norms.
Al Hammadi emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating that the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program has emerged as a global model, showcasing the ability to deliver a comprehensive nuclear energy project within a set timeline and regulatory framework. Guided by the UAE's nuclear energy policy established in 2008, the nation is leading the global shift towards cleaner energy solutions.
From 2018 to 2023, the UAE achieved the highest per capita increase in clean electricity globally, with 75% of this power generated by the Barakah Plant's three operational units. With the completion of full-fleet commercial operations, the UAE is set to further solidify its role in the global transition to clean energy. "Nuclear energy is a logical choice for the UAE, and the 40 TWh of zero-emissions electricity we now produce around the clock positions us to attract advanced industries and top global companies seeking reliable, sustainable energy sources," Al Hammadi added.
Looking ahead, ENEC plans to leverage its extensive expertise and proven track record to explore further investment and development opportunities in advanced nuclear technologies, both locally and internationally. With a history of delivering four units in four years and less than eight years per unit, ENEC is well-positioned to support the growth of the nuclear sector and contribute to the global goal of tripling nuclear capacity by 2050, as committed during COP 28 alongside 24 other nations.
