The first Hindu stone temple in Abu Dhabi, inaugurated earlier this month, is set to open to the public on March 1, marking a historic moment for the Hindu community in the UAE. From February 15 to 29, overseas devotees and VIP guests had the privilege to visit the temple. Going forward, it will be accessible to all UAE residents from 9 am to 8 pm, except on Mondays.
Demand to visit the BAPS Hindu Mandir has been significant, with visitors from both within the country and abroad eager to experience this monumental religious landmark. To manage the influx, visitors are required to register through a dedicated website or the Festival of Harmony app.
Situated on a 27-acre site in Abu Mureikhah, near Al Rahba off the Dubai-Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed Highway, the temple was constructed by the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Swaminarayan Sanstha at a cost of approximately Rs 700 crore, with the generous donation of land by the UAE government.
The grand inauguration, graced by Indian Prime Minister Modi and attended by over 5,000 invitees, showcased the temple's magnificent architecture. Built in the Nagara style, the temple features seven spires representing the seven Emirates of the UAE, adorned with idols of various deities including Lord Ram, Lord Shiv, and Lord Krishna.
Incorporating elements from Indian mythology and Emirati culture, the temple's design includes carvings of camels, elephants, and the UAE's national bird, the falcon. Intricate marble carvings and columns adorn the interior, symbolizing peace and harmony.
The temple's facade boasts exquisite marble carvings against a backdrop of sandstone, meticulously crafted by skilled artisans from Rajasthan and Gujarat. Additionally, holy water from the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in India flows on the temple's sides, symbolizing purity and spirituality.
With its rich symbolism and architectural splendor, the Abu Dhabi Hindu Mandir stands as a testament to cultural diversity and religious tolerance in the UAE, fostering unity and mutual respect among its diverse population.
