12th Intl. Autism Research Conference Wraps Up in Abu Dhabi

The International Conference on Advancements in Autism Research concluded in Abu Dhabi with a focus on the theme Challenges and Solutions. Advocating for regular hosting of such events, it brought together experts, scientists, specialists, practitioners, parents, and early intervention stakeholders. The conference underscored the imperative of robust scientific research on autism spectrum disorder (ASD) biomarkers at the global level to attain accreditation for research outcomes. It also stressed the significance of academic collaboration to document and exchange insights on the latest ASD research developments.

Acknowledging the generous sponsorship of His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination (ZHO), participants expressed gratitude for the care and rehabilitation programs offered to people with determination in the UAE. They praised ZHO's initiatives across Abu Dhabi.

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the 12th edition of the conference was organized by ZHO in collaboration with ADNOC, SEHA, and Lotus Holistic Abu Dhabi at Abu Dhabi Energy Centre. His Excellency Abdullah Abdulali Al Hamidan, Secretary-General of ZHO, commended the conference's success and thanked the sponsors, committees, and organizers for their contributions.

During the conference, efforts were directed towards presenting and discussing the latest autism research developments through various sessions, workshops, and lectures. The event facilitated dialogue among stakeholders, fostering awareness and knowledge enhancement to improve services for individuals with ASD and their families.

The conference advocated for a national autism prevalence survey, increased utilization of artificial intelligence in autism education and diagnosis, and heightened awareness programs for early detection of ASD symptoms. It emphasized the integration of autistic children into mainstream schools, supported by trained personnel, and encouraged collaborative research groups across nations.

Recommendations included establishing a specialized laboratory for medical analyses, promoting balanced diets during pregnancy, facilitating suitable employment opportunities for autistic individuals, and conducting workshops on mental health and positive interactions. Dr. Heba Hegres, the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at the United Nations, lauded the UAE's efforts and underscored the importance of family support for individuals with autism.

Dr. Hegres expressed appreciation for ZHO's sponsorship and the decision to publish a specialized scientific journal on autism. She emphasized the pivotal role of families in supporting individuals with autism and announced plans for an independent study on this subject. Dr. Hegres hailed the conference's research efforts, highlighting their significance in advancing societal commitment to addressing autism.
