A man was arrested after he tried to open an emergency exit door on an AirAsia X flight heading to Sydney. The flight, D7220, was coming from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Saturday, April 5, when the incident happened.
The man, named Shadi Taiseer Alsaaydeh, is from Jordan. The Australian Federal Police said he first tried to open the rear emergency door of the plane during the flight. When the cabin crew and passengers stopped him, he reportedly hit a crew member. After that, the airline staff moved him to a seat in the middle of the plane.
However, once seated, he tried to open another emergency exit door, this time in the middle section of the aircraft.

The Australian Federal Police has now charged Alsaaydeh with:
Two counts of endangering the safety of an aircraft
One count of assaulting a cabin crew member
Detective Acting Superintendent Davina Copelin from the Australian Federal Police said,“This kind of behaviour could have ended in tragedy. People flying on planes should never have to deal with violence or dangerous actions. We take this seriously and won’t hesitate to act against such behaviour.”
AirAsia also released a statement. They said that their well-trained crew handled the situation properly and made sure everyone stayed safe.“At no time was the safety of our guests or crew in danger,” the airline said.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy for any kind of bad behaviour, and we immediately informed the Australian Federal Police and other authorities to meet the plane when it landed in Sydney.”
The airline also said they wouldn’t comment any further as the matter is now in the hands of the police.
Alsaaydeh’s lawyer said that his client works for the Jordanian government in the field of nuclear waste management and has no past criminal record. The lawyer explained that Alsaaydeh had taken two medications—a sleeping pill and pseudoephedrine—and had also drunk alcohol before the flight. Because of this, he does not remember anything about what happened.
Alsaaydeh is expected to appear in court on Wednesday, April 9.
