Luigi Mangione, who is accused of ambushing and killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has thanked the people who have written to him while he is being held in a New York City detention center. Mangione made his first public statement since his arrest in December on a website created by his defense team. In his message, Mangione expressed deep gratitude for the support he has received. He said, "I am overwhelmed by - and grateful for - everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support. This support has come from all over, crossing political, racial, and even class lines. I’ve received letters from across the country and around the world. Even though I can’t reply to most letters, I want everyone to know that I read every one of them. Thank you again to everyone who took the time to write. I look forward to hearing more in the future."

This statement is the first time Mangione has spoken publicly since he was arrested in December. He is facing serious charges, including first-degree murder related to terrorism, in connection with Thompson’s death. The CEO was shot in the back while walking on a sidewalk in Manhattan on December 4. The killing has been widely condemned by public officials. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg made it clear that such "premeditated, targeted gun violence" will not be accepted. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro also spoke out against people who support Mangione’s actions, calling them wrong. He said, "In some dark corners, this killer is being hailed as a hero. Hear me on this: He is no hero."
Mangione is also facing charges in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested on December 9. The investigation revealed that Mangione used a "ghost gun" with a suppressor to carry out the murder. The authorities also found unusual words like "deny," "depose," and "delay" written on two bullet casings and one bullet found at the scene.
Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. His defense team has set up a website to provide accurate information about the case and to correct any false information. The website also answers common questions about the case.
Supporters of Mangione have raised nearly $400,000 to help pay for his legal defense. His next court appearance is scheduled for February 21 in Manhattan.
It is important to note that UnitedHealthcare is the largest private health insurance company in the United States. When Mangione was arrested, authorities found that he had written about his dissatisfaction with the healthcare system. However, they have said that neither Mangione nor his family were insured by UnitedHealthcare.
The case has sparked a lot of interest and debate, with many people questioning Mangione’s motives behind his actions.
