King Charles III gave an important speech at the opening of the Canadian Parliament. In his speech, he talked about Canada’s place in a changing world and its relationship with the United States.

This speech was given in Ottawa and shared the new government’s plans. These plans are from Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose Liberal Party won the election in April. During the election, one big topic was the tension with US President Donald Trump, who made statements that worried many Canadians about their country’s independence.

King Charles, who is Canada’s head of state, said that relationships with other countries, including the US, are changing. He also made it clear that both Canada and the US are independent nations.

Here are five main points from King Charles’s speech, which was the first time in almost 50 years that a monarch opened the Canadian Parliament.

1. A Message About Canada’s Independence
Prime Minister Carney invited King Charles to give this speech partly to send a message to President Trump. Trump has said things that seem to challenge Canada’s independence. Even though the King did not mention Trump by name, the speech talked about the close but changing relationship between Canada and the US. The King praised Canada’s pride, unity, and strength. He said he admired Canada’s unique identity and how much the country has grown since Queen Elizabeth II last gave a speech in 1957. He described Canada as a bold and innovative country. The King reminded everyone that the Crown is a symbol of unity and stability for Canada. He ended by quoting Canada’s national anthem, saying, "The True North is indeed strong and free!"

2. The King’s Speech Was a Symbol of Support
Usually, the Governor General, who represents the King in Canada, gives this speech. But this time, King Charles gave it himself. This was seen as a special show of support for Canada during uncertain times. On the same day, President Trump again joked about Canada possibly becoming part of the United States. He shared a plan for a missile defense system called the Golden Dome and said Canada would have to pay billions of dollars if it stayed independent. Canada’s government strongly rejected this idea.

3. Facing a Changing and Uncertain World
The King said Canada is facing a world full of new and big challenges. He mentioned that the global trade system, which has helped Canada’s economy for many years, is changing. Canada’s relationships with other countries, including the US and European allies, are also changing. The King said this moment in history is a great opportunity for Canada. He encouraged the country to think big and act boldly to transform its economy, like it has not done since World War II.

4. Plans to Improve Canada’s Economy and Trade
King Charles talked about plans from the new government to help Canada’s economy. These plans include speeding up big infrastructure projects and supporting more Indigenous people to own important projects. The government also promised to remove trade barriers within Canada that make it harder for provinces to trade with each other. These barriers cost Canada a lot of money every year. Some political leaders said the government needs to share more details about how it will make these plans happen.

5. Helping with Housing, Taxes, and Security
Housing prices in Canada have gone very high, making it hard for many people to buy homes. The government plans to build more houses, including using faster building methods like prefabricated homes. They also want to lower some charges that make housing more expensive and stop charging taxes for first-time homebuyers buying homes under one million Canadian dollars. The King also mentioned a tax cut for lower-middle-class Canadians to help reduce living costs.

Crime was another important topic. The government promised tougher punishments for car theft, home break-ins, human trafficking, and drug smuggling.

Bonus: Defense Spending and Military Plans
Canada has been pressured by the US and other NATO allies to spend more on its military. Canada has not yet reached the goal of spending 2% of its economy on defense but plans to reach this by 2030. The King said Canada will rebuild and strengthen its military. Canada will also work more closely with European allies on defense and increase its military presence in the Arctic region. The government is also discussing joining the US missile defense system.
