A massive explosion rocked a chemical facility in Louisville, Kentucky, on Tuesday afternoon, injuring at least 11 people. The explosion occurred at the Givaudan Sense Colour chemical plant, located on Payne Street. Following the blast, local authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for residents within a one-mile radius of the facility, urging them to stay indoors due to the potential hazards associated with the explosion.
The Louisville Metro Emergency Services confirmed the hazardous materials incident, posting an update on social media, stating, “There has been a hazardous materials incident at 1901 Payne St. A shelter-in-place order has been issued for those in a one-mile radius.” The Louisville Fire Department also issued a similar announcement, emphasizing the severity of the situation, describing it as a “large scale incident.”
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg addressed the media, confirming that all the injured were employees of the Givaudan Sense Colour facility, which specializes in the production of flavor and fragrance ingredients. Two of the injured individuals have been rescued, though there were no reports of fatalities. The mayor expressed that while initial efforts were focused on safety and emergency response, the full extent of the chemicals involved and the nature of the explosion were still unknown. "We are working to get more details from the company so we can have more information on what was inside the facility and what chemicals might have been involved," Mayor Greenberg said during a press briefing.

Louisville Fire Chief Brian O'Neill elaborated that emergency responders were dealing with a complex situation involving hazardous materials, a building collapse, and the explosion itself. The fire department’s quick response was credited with evacuating most of the individuals from the affected area, but the exact condition of the injured remained unclear at the time of the press conference. Fire crews were also working to secure the area and assess any further dangers related to chemicals at the site.
The explosion occurred around 3:00 p.m., sending a shockwave through the city. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched, and the surrounding areas were quickly cordoned off. The Louisville Metro Police Department also responded to the scene, blocking off roads around the facility to ensure the safety of the public.
As of later updates, the shelter-in-place order for the affected area had been lifted, but the evacuation order for two blocks around the facility remained in effect. The situation continued to develop, and local authorities were monitoring the chemical risks while providing updates to the public.
This incident marks one of the more serious industrial accidents in Louisville, and local officials are expected to release more details once a full investigation into the cause of the explosion and its effects on the surrounding environment is completed.
