HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), shared that DEWA built 1,530 new 11 kV electricity distribution substations across Dubai in 2024. This is an increase of 8.2% compared to the number built in 2023.
The construction of these substations and all the related work took a total of 1,070,670 work hours to complete. All of this was done while carefully following top health and safety standards.
By the end of 2024, DEWA had a total of 45,317 medium voltage substations (these are 11 kV and 6.6 kV substations) in Dubai. This increase in the number of substations shows how DEWA is working hard to grow its energy system to meet the rising need for electricity. This growing demand comes from Dubai’s strong economy and fast-growing cities and communities.

Al Tayer said, “DEWA is always working to help make Dubai a great place to live, work, and visit by building modern and well-planned infrastructure. As part of the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33) and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, we are upgrading our electricity network to match future needs. We look at how much electricity Dubai will need by 2030, based on how the population and economy are growing.”
He also said that DEWA uses the latest technology in making and delivering electricity. Because of this, DEWA is ranked among the best in the world in more than 10 key areas. He added that electricity line losses (which means energy lost while being delivered) were reduced to just 2.2%. In comparison, many countries in Europe and the US lose between 6% to 7%. This means DEWA is more efficient and reliable, and a great example for the rest of the world.
Rashid Bin Humaidan, who is the Executive Vice President of Distribution Power at DEWA, said that DEWA works with top international companies and uses modern technology to make sure electricity is always available, reliable, and eco-friendly. DEWA is also working to automate its network and use smart systems to reduce power cuts and fix problems quickly.
He explained that all of this helps DEWA handle the increasing demand for electricity and makes sure people always have a steady power supply. It also helps improve the satisfaction and happiness of everyone who uses DEWA services.
